Competing teams will have an opportunity to win 100 points for each event they attend during the month of convention.

 

Artist: Gabriel Izquierdo, Latin Grammy Choreographer (Colombia)

Colombia is known as “The land of a thousand rhythms” but actually holds over 1,025 folk rhythms. Some of the best known genres are cumbia and vallenato. The most recognized interpreters of traditional Caribbean and Afro colombian music are Totó la Momposina and Francisco Zumaqué.

Body percussion may be performed on its own or as an accompaniment to music and/or dance. Examples of countries’ folk traditions that incorporate body percussion include Indonesian saman, Ethiopian armpit music, palmas in flamenco, and the hambone from the United States. Body percussion is a subset of “body music”.

Bollywood Dance is the name given to the dance-form used in Indian (Hindi) films. Bollywood Dance style is a fusion of various dance styles. It includes Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Bhangra, Jazz, Hip-hop, Arabic, Western dance to name a few. Classical Indian dance incorporates the two basic elements of dance and expression. Now imagine that combine with body percussion, welcome Bollywood Stepping.

Mbalax (or mbalakh) is the national popular dance music of Senegal and the Gambia. Mbalax has its sacred origins in the Serer people’s ultra-religious, ultra-conservative njuup music tradition—and their sacred ndut rite ceremonies. … The genre’s name derived from accompanying rhythms used in sabar called mbalax. Now imagine the fusion of this with step?

Artist: Remo, Founder of the Art of Stepping (USA)

Art of Stepping is a trademarked/copyrighted program that teaches step through a written language called the Remo System. This presidential award winning program utilizes mathematical formulas and basic algebra to create document movement.

Step dance is a generic term for dance styles in which footwork is considered to be the most important part of the dance and limb movements and styling are either restricted or considered irrelevant. Step dancing includes clog dancing in which the steps are performed by performers wearing clogs.

Artist: Soraya, New York Studio of Irish Step Dance (USA)

Irish Dance is a group of traditional dance forms originating from Ireland, encompassing dancing both solo and in groups, and dancing for social, competitive, and performance purposes. Irish Dance in its current form developed from various influences such as Native Irish Dance, French quadrilles and English country dancing. Dance was taught by “travelling dance masters” across Ireland in the 17th-18th century, and separate dance forms developed according to regional practice and differing purposes. Irish dance became a significant part of Irish culture, particularly for Irish nationalist movements. From the early 20th century, a number of organizations promoted and codified the various forms of dance, creating competitive structures and standardized styles.

Tap dance is a type of dance characterized by using the sounds of metal taps affixed to the heel and toe of shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion, coupled with both characteristic and interpretative body movements. Its roots were in minstrel shows, it gained prominence in vaudeville, then emerged into an art form and means of expression alongside the evolution of jazz.

Choreography is the art or practice of designing sequences of movements of physical bodies (or their depictions) in which motion, form, or both are specified. Choreography may also refer to the design itself.

 

Artist: Black Hulk (Peru)

The Afro-Peruvian zapateo is a dance that is practiced in various areas of coastal Peru. It combines steps from step dance and corporal percussion with jumps and acrobatics to demonstrate the skill of the dancer. It has been a tradition in many families since the Afro-Peruvian cultural revitalization in the 1960s.
